…Because there is only one of you in all time this expression is unique.”

This quote defines not only me but maybe even more to the artists in my work. Particularly in solo work, where I really search to find the hidden unique language of that particular individual. If it is group, I try to find the perfect concept to emotionally and physically engage the dancers so they will feel a deep connection to and ultimate ownership of the work. If it is a theatrical piece, I work with the director to see what that particular scene needs. I may try to illuminate an aspect of a character or relationship that perhaps the dialogue or songs leave out. Or perhaps the story needs to move and progress to a new place in the plot and therefore the choreography is the vehicle to take it there.

“There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction and blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes ‘us’ more alive than the others.”

I love the feeling of working in the studio, struggling to find the right movement, being in the process with the dancers and the endless job of editing. I admit I have always enjoyed the arduous work in the studio far more than any other aspect in dance.

A letter from Martha Graham to Agnes DeMille

There is a vitality,
a life force,
a quickening
that is translated through you into action,
and because there is only one of you in all time,
this expression is unique.

And If you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost.
The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine
how good it is
nor how valuable it is
nor how it compares with other expressions.

It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly
to keep the channel open.
You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work.
You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate YOU.

Keep the channel open…
No artist is pleased…

There is no satisfaction whatever at anytime
There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction
a blessed unrest that keeps us marching
and makes “us” MORE alive than the others.
